What is the Community Education Program?

The Community Education Program was created to increase awareness and understanding of poverty and homelessness, and to foster community participation in prevention activities and solutions.

This is accomplished through speaking engagements, poverty simulations, the creation of educational materials, and website development.

Coalition staff is involved in the following activities:

1. Generating awareness of poverty and homelessness by conducting speaking engagements with various public markets including concerned citizens groups, civic groups, faith-based groups, local and state governmental agencies, schools, and universities.

2. Fostering an understanding of poverty and homelessness by conducting Community Action Poverty Simulations.  Learn more by visiting Poverty Simulation.

3. Creating visual and written materials and developing the Coalition website to educate the community about homelessness and ways to get involved.

4. Developing a report and presenting the findings of the Cost of Homelessness Study.

What is the purpose of community education?

Increase community awareness and understanding of poverty and homelessness.

Increase the community's participation in homeless issues and solutions.

What kind of information is presented in community education programs?

Coalition staff or volunteers will present an overview of homelessness in our community.  We discuss the realities of homelessness and poverty, why it happens, who it affects, and what we can do as a community.  We want to show the community the true face of homelessness.

Presentations are typically 30 minutes but can be tailored to meet the needs of your group.  We can also develop presentations to focus on specific issues of homelessness.  As possible, we also show our video/CD, Our Forgotten Community.

How do I request a speaker for my group?

If you are interested in requesting a speaker for your group, call the Coalition at (502) 589-0190.

Please tell us when and where your event will be held, how many people will participate, your presentation needs, and if you have the equipment for us to show our video or CD to your group.
